General Notes:
DeWitt King's obituary was published in the DETROIT NEWS. It stated that DeWitt resided in Detroit for 30 years and died in Detroit after several months of illness. His funeral service was at his residence, 279 Hancock Ave. West, with the Martha Holmes Memorial Church Rev. Simpson Horner presiding. At the time of the 1900 census, they lived on Avery Avenue in Detroit.
His children, it said, also residing in Detroit were listed as: Anson King, Mrs. Frank Ferris, Mrs. Fred Pungs, and Mrs. Walter Bowen, and Christiana Kinney. Also, according to the 1900 Wayne County, Michigan Census, (E.D. 90, Page 7, Line 74) DeWitt also had a son named Herbert residing with him at the time of that census. The census also stated that DeWitt had a total of six children.
In the 1871 Census of Ontario Province, Huron Co., I found "Clinton" King, age 41, born in Ontario, religion--Wesleyan Methodist (his father, William, was Methodist), Irish heritage, occupation--farmer, in District 26 (Huron North), Subdistrict G (Morris), Division 1, Page 33. They had evidently been living there since at least 1868, when Anson was born, per a baptism record found for him stating Anson was born in Turnberry, Huron Co., Ontario.
The 1900 census states DeWitt's parents were also born in Canada, but his death certificate states that his father, William, was born in Vermont and his mother, Sibyl Clark, was born in New York. Sibyl was actually born in Prince Edward Co., Ontario. Also, a "Mr. Kinney" was the informant on DeWitt's death certificate. DeWitt was buried in Detroit in Evergreen Cemetery, Section 8, Lot 4, Grave 3.
